  2. Update 1.5.1 brings a host of significant changes for medium tanks Leopard 1 and STB-1. Let’s find out more about the impact these changes will make on their current roles in battle! Leopard 1: A Mobile Sniper Since its introduction in World of Tanks, we’ve been considering the X Leopard 1 as a long-distance sniper, quickly adapting to changes in the combat situation and providing support to allies from a distance. But a good sniper needs a suitable weapon, so we focused on improving it. Through two iterations of closed testing, we improved the following characteristics of this tank: Accuracy Armour penetration Shell velocity Gun stabilization By default, it will fire armour-piercing shells, which will remain standard, at a speed of 1480 m/s. During the tests, we concluded that we should keep AP shells as standard because they better suit the nature of the vehicle, designed as it is for long-range combat. As we stated previously, the APCR shells will be special, but their armour penetration will be further improved to 323 mm. Their speed will reach 1613 m/s, which puts them among the fastest shells in the game. The Leopard 1’s gun dispersion during movement and suspension rotation will be 0.13, and this is ~ 24% lower than its current value. This tweak, complemented by a very short aiming time (1.7 seconds), will allow it to prepare for the shot much faster. In addition, the rotation speed of the suspension will be improved to 50 degrees/s, and the maximum reverse speed will increase to 23 km/h. Together, these changes will make the Leopard 1 a very mobile and deadly sniper. Tier VIII – IX vehicles from this branch will be subject to similar changes. We’ll also increase shell velocity for the IX Leopard Prototyp A , its armour penetration and alpha damage, while decreasing the gun dispersion during suspension movement and improving the rotation speed of the suspension itself. In addition, we will improve aiming time and increase DPM, together with a slight increase in engine power. The VIII Indien-Panzer will receive improved gun dispersion and aiming time, as well as a slight increase in armour penetration and gun damage, making it easier to hurt enemies. In addition, the Premium medium VIII Panzer 58 Mutz and its derivative vehicles will see improvements in the following characteristics: Accuracy Shell velocity Damage per shot (from 240 to 250 points) HP pool (up to 1350 points) View range (from 380 to 390 meters) STB-1: A Versatile Support Vehicle The major change after testing in Supertest for the X STB-1 is the addition of a hydropneumatic suspension. Thanks to this new mechanic, the STB-1 will be able to incline its hull, increasing its gun depression angles. Hydropneumatic suspension activates automatically – it’s like the one available in top-tier Swedish medium tanks. Its overall gun depression angle will increase to -12 degrees, which is two degrees higher than the current value. To better represent this new mechanism, this value will be divided between the hull and the gun in the following proportions: -6 degrees when the hull is inclined -6 degrees when the gun is inclined. This will make the most of the relief during the battle, allowing the STB-1 to hit the enemy from extreme angles and unexpected directions. Another important change is the reinforcement of its turret armour. To make the tank more competitive in close combat, we’re going to: Remove weak points in the gun mantlet armour Additionally increase the total mantlet protection Generally increase the turret armour in its frontal zone Finally, the STB-1 will do less damage per shot, but its DPM will increase even more compared to the first iteration of the Supertest. We will shorten the reload time of its gun from 8 seconds to 7.1 seconds, allowing its damage per minute value to go to 3042 points, the second-highest among all medium Tier X tanks in our game. Gun stabilization was already significantly improved in the first round of tests, so combined with these tweaks, the STB-1 will be able to shoot more often and become a true menace on the battlefield. But to maintain balance in combat performance, its increased rate of fire will be compensated by reducing alpha damage to 360 points. A few words about reducing the speed of shells. For Supertests, we usually replace APCR with AP shells, which reduces overall shell velocity. But after the first iteration, we decided to reduce it less significantly – from 1478 m/s to 1185 m/s. Thus, both shells – standard and special – have become slower. However, after enhancing the role of the STB-1, high shell velocity won’t be such a crucial factor for this vehicle. It will instead take advantage of its new hydropneumatic suspension, improved turret armour, increased DPM and significantly increased gun stabilization. Lastly, armour-piercing shells will be better normalized, which will increase the chance of penetration. The STB-1’s Tier VIII – IX predecessors have received enhancements as well. Just like with the STB-1, the IX Type 61 now has a more powerful gun with better stabilization and increased rate of fire (~ 18%), but reduced damage per shot. As for the VIII STA-1 , its gun stabilization and rate of fire have also improved, though its alpha damage has not decreased. And last but not least, the Premium tank VIII STA-2 is now more mobile, with faster shells (the velocity of standard AP shells has been increased by 34%!). The first Supertest iteration for the re-balanced medium tanks is over, and we would like to share the results with you. Our plans to re-balance some MTs prompted a heated discussion within the community. We totally agree this is a very important matter for many of you as the proposed changes concern Tier X vehicles—the prized ones which one doesn’t get in a day or two. Even positive adjustments to top-tier vehicles may impact the motivation to invest in their research. That’s why we do our best to inform you on every change beforehand. Now we’ll describe some additional adjustments to the MTs in more detail, and will also explain what we intend to achieve. It should be noted that two of the five vehicles we mentioned before, the Object 430 and the Object 430U, will stay intact for now. Please take note that all changes are currently being Supertested, and the stats may be further tweaked during the next iterations. The final stats of the tanks involved will be defined only before the release. Leopard 1 From its inception, we envisioned this tank as a mobile sniper able to swiftly react to the battle dynamic and lend support to allies while staying far from the enemy. A good sniper needs a quality gun, so we concentrated our efforts on the tank’s armament. After two closed test iterations, we boosted a range of its parameters, including accuracy, stabilization, armor penetration, and shell velocity. The APCR will continue to be the basic round of Leopard 1, and will travel at a speed of 1,480 meters per second. During the tests we came to the conclusion that keeping this shell type best suits the tank’s role (a long-range striker). The new special shell will be an ACPR, too (as we told you before), but its armor penetration will be improved even further, up to 323 mm. Its velocity of 1,613 meters per second will make it one of the fastest rounds currently in the game. The increased gun accuracy of 0.29 makes the Leopard 1 the most precise shooter among all Tier X medium tanks. If the testing goes well, the operators of the Leopard 1 will be able to choose between two kinds of APCRs, both with fine stats. On top of that, these rounds’ armor penetration stays high at long range. But that’s not all. We plan to test the improved stabilization which will amount to 0.13 both on the move and while taking a turn (approximately 28% better than the stabilization on the main server now). Together with the short aiming time of 1.7 seconds, this will let the Leopard 1 get ready for firing much faster. The Leopard 1 will get these modifications now, and if these are up to our expectations, the tank will become the ultimate mobile sniper. By increasing the alpha, the accuracy, and the stabilization, we’re fine-tuning the top German for comfortable play in its redefined role. High shell velocity and armor penetration will allow to damage an opponent even from afar. Of course, the vulnerabilities shall stay: the armor won’t thicken, still being almost a ‘placeholder’ one. Please keep that in mind: a true sniper should be very cautious! STB-1 Currently the STB-1 is a generic tank which plays pretty well at mid-range but lacks a unique style. We intend to create one—by introducing a very peculiar feature plus significantly boosting the stats, to make it a formidable close-to-mid-range fighter. The said feature is a hydro-pneumatic suspension the tankers have kept asking for—because the real-world STB-1 had one. Thanks to this mechanic, the Japanese will be able to tilt its hull, increasing its effective gun depression. The suspension will switch on automatically, just like on the new Swedish medium tanks. The total gun depression will increase from 10 to 12 degrees. Because of the introduction of a new mechanic the ‘tilt input’ will be split 50/50: 6 degrees at the expense of the hull and 6 degrees at the expense of the gun. Should we get positive test results, the STB-1 will be able to use terrain folds to maximal efficiency, hitting its enemies at extreme angles from unexpected directions. We’re also going to test the second important adjustment: a boost to turret protection. For the STB-1 to keep it together in a brawl, we’ll do the following: Get rid of weak armor zones in the gun mantlet Increase the mantlet armor thickness Bolster the overall frontal turret protection After such a complex upgrade to the turret’s armor, the STB-1 will cope with enemy strikes much better. Together with the new suspension, this will strengthen the tank’s terrain-based play. The Japanese medium will be able to dish out damage reliably while surviving multiple hits. “Reliable” is the best word describing the damage dealing capacity of the STB-1, as the third essential change to the tank is the increased damage per minute. While the alpha will go down, the DPM will grow even more compared to the first Supertest iteration. Due to reloading time decreased from 7.3 to 7.1 seconds, the DPM will cross the 3,000 threshold, reaching an awesome height of 3,042 points of damage which is the second best for the Tier X medium tanks. Besides that, the STB-1 will keep its improved gun stabilization from the first testing phase. Due to the combination of all these factors—the increased DPM, better stabilization, and the introduction of an AP shell—the tank will be able to shoot more often while sustaining high DPM. The changes to velocity of the rounds should be addressed separately. During the Supertest, the APCR shell will be substituted by an AP one. This entails a speed decrease, but after the first testing phase we decided not to make it drastic (from the current 1478 to 1185 meters per second). Thus, both rounds (basic and special) are in fact becoming slower. Still, due to the changes to the STB-1 tactical role, the velocity of its rounds ceases to be a very important parameter. The tank will excel at close-to-mid-range combat, using its hydro-pneumatic suspension and also its improved turret armor, DPM, and gun stabilization. AP rounds will normalize better, increasing the chance to penetrate enemy armor. AMX 30B We’d like to run one more test iteration for this one with its stats unchanged, so it will transition to the next stage as it is. The Conclusion Re-balancing Tier X vehicles isn’t easy, and that’s why the closed test consists of many steps. Not all the tweaks make it into the release; those bringing needed results get into the Common test where you can probe them yourselves. Our objective is to make these tanks more diverse gameplay-wise, and also more efficient in their respective tactical roles.   9. WoT Portal info In the Pursuit of Excellence Throughout 2019, we will be revising the characteristics of various vehicles in World of Tanks, trying to find an optimal balance. It’s an ongoing process, and we carefully consider your feedback to better understand in which direction we should proceed. Our ultimate goal is to make all vehicles competitive on the battlefield, while maintaining the unique features of each tank. At WG Fest last December, we announced an upcoming rebalance of five iconic vehicles. One of them, the Kranvagn, will receive its portion of consistent improvements soon with Update 1.5. Now it’s time to pay attention to some medium tanks and adjust their key battle parameters. Let’s take a closer look! The STB-1 and Its Branch The STB-1 is a versatile, fast-accelerating vehicle with a well-sloped turret and good gun depression angles. This vehicle is ideal for mid-to-close combat, and it’s designed to constantly deal damage. The STB-1 commonly plays the role of an active aggressor on the front line, or of an effective support vehicle – the latter is how this vehicle was initially conceived. Its DPM is very impressive and is one of the best in World of Tanks, while its gun stabilization leaves much to be desired. So it’s time to make it more competitive and add some new touches to its profile! Finally, we are looking to equip the STB-1 with a commonly requested game feature: hydropneumatic suspension — just like the one available with the top-tier Swedish medium tanks. We will thoroughly test this feature, and if we are satisfied with the test results, we will definitely equip this vehicle with it. In addition, we’re going to rebalance the performance of some other vehicles in the Japanese Tech Tree, especially those sitting at Tier VIII, the STA-1 and the STA-2. The DPM of the STA-1 will increase, making it more competitive. We also carefully analyzed your feedback regarding the STA-2 and its gameplay and realized this mobile tank could be even more effective, so we will also slightly improve some of its key characteristics. We will unveil the detailed changes of this Premium machine a bit later, after finalizing the settings of other vehicles. The Leopard 1 We consider the Leopard 1 as a long-distance sniper — fast and maneuverable. First of all, we will increase its alpha damage from 390 to 420, as well as armor penetration. We will also change the type of standard shells for this tank. By default, it will fire armor-piercing shells, and their velocity will become one of the highest in the game. The Leopard 1 will be enhanced as a sniper and will be able to hit enemies more effectively at long range, thanks to increased accuracy and decreased aiming time. Also, its forward speed will increase by 5 km/h to 70 km/h, making the Leopard 1 the fastest Tier X medium tank in the game! Due to such a serious improvement in its characteristics, we will have to reduce some other parameters which have less impact on its battle role. In particular, we’re reducing: Reverse speed by 3 km/h, to 20 km/h HP pool by 100 points, to 1850 points Power-to-weight ratio However, after the rebalance, the Leopard 1 will still retain excellent mobility. We also want to properly reconfigure the entire branch and check the effects of our changes on the researchable vehicles. Only then will we proceed to rebalance Premium Tier VIII tanks. So, the characteristics of the Pz. 58 Mutz will certainly be changed, but only after rebalancing the entire branch. The AMX 30 B The main change we’ve prepared for this tank is increased armor penetration with standard and special shells. At the same time, the alpha damage of the AMX 30 B will remain average. When rebalancing the characteristics of this vehicle, we constantly kept in mind that it had no distinct playing role. The AMX 30 B is a universal second line support vehicle, which can perform equally well in a variety of game situations. However, it lacks accuracy and armor penetration when playing at long distances, so we decided to improve these characteristics. It’s the most universal choice as it performs better than the Leopard 1 at close quarters and better than the STB-1 at long range. The Object 430 and the Object 430U These formidable vehicles have demonstrated good effectiveness since their introduction in World of Tanks, so we didn’t rush to change their characteristics. They were also not very common in Random Battles, and their number didn’t affect the game balance. However, the number of these two tanks has increased in the last six months, as well as your feedback regarding their combat performance. Today we’re starting work on one of the hottest and the most discussed issues among those mentioned at WG Fest 2018: the overall 25–30% drop in damage for special rounds. We want to make the shell choice more thoughtful in every battle situation and lower the damage special rounds deal (especially against well-armored spots). It should be noted: this is the very first testing iteration aimed at general evaluation of our hypothesis described above. For now, it’s merely a rebalance of special shells’ damage, without any adjustments to their cost. We’ll conduct the Supertest with a limited selection of vehicles (a bit more than 30) to check: the viability of the idea and the impact of its implementation on the game; the effect of lowering the special shells’ damage has on the total damage dealt; the overall combat efficiency of the vehicles involved in testing. The decision to decrease special rounds’ damage isn’t set in stone as it’s still in development, so it may change significantly. After the first testing run, we’ll decide what to do next: we may change the amount of damage we slash off the special rounds, fine-tune the stats of individual vehicles, or enlarge the pool of tanks in the Supertest to gather even more data. Of course, we’ll take into consideration your feedback on the proposed changes. We intentionally selected very different vehicles for the testing pool—for the most efficient tracking of the impact the rebalance will have on battle stats. For some vehicles having APCRs as their basic rounds, we substituted these with AP shots of the same speed. Likewise, for the vehicles with AP rounds as their specials, we replaced these with APCRs. We’ll track the distribution of damage done per shell type, the changes in vehicles’ battle stats with regard to their class and role, and lots of other parameters. This is one of the key areas the players on heavily armored vehicles asked us to address. How shall the damage be re-distributed between the two other shell types? Our aim is to reduce the special rounds damage (against well-armored targets in particular). Thus the overall damage of other shell types could grow; we want to check whether it’s true during the test. We’ll monitor these parameters and modify them if needed. How shall the share of HE shell damage change? Currently, the total share of HE damage is small, and we don’t intend to change it. Overall, the combined special HE shell damage is mostly dealt by the Type 4 Heavy and the Type 5 Heavy tanks (we adjusted some stats of both of these for the test). The special round for the Type 5 Heavy will be substituted with a HESH with an alpha of 750 points and a penetration of 193 mm. During the tests, we’ll thoroughly monitor the changes in HE shells usage after the special rounds rebalance. How shall the rebalance affect the battle performance of individual vehicles? We know that currently certain tanks are played with a greater-than-average special to non-special rounds ratio, to increase their efficiency. So we want to assess how these vehicles’ performance changes. The test is just starting, and your feedback will help us make correct decisions.
